The Testimony

The story behind the song

"Who Are You" opens with a confession spoken into the quiet: "I spent so much of my life becoming who everybody needed me to be. Then God asked me one question: Who are you?"

The verses take inventory of every borrowed name — the titles, the applause, the rooms that clapped and the rooms that emptied — "I wore so many names, I forgot which one was mine." And then the chorus asks the question nobody can outrun: who are you when the lights go down, when nobody's around, when everything you built falls through?

"I am who You say I am — and You know who You are."

The answer arrives as a call and response — chosen, covered, called, His — a choir answering every label she lays down. From the debut album about the space between who you were and who you're called to be: Still Becoming.

Intro — spoken

I spent so much of my life
Becoming who everybody needed me to be.
Then God asked me one question:
Who are you?

Verse 1

Who am I without the title
Without somebody saying well done
Without the room applauding
Without somewhere to run
Who am I when what I built
Doesn't look the way it did
When the money moves, the people leave
And I have to sit with this
I wore so many names
I forgot which one was mine
Successful, strong, rejected, loved
Depending on the time

Pre-Chorus

If everything I used to measure me
Falls through
Would I still know who I am
If all I had was You?

Chorus

Who are you when the lights go down?
Who are you when nobody's around?
When everything you built falls through
Do you know who God says is you?
Not what they called you
Not what you lost
Not your greatest win
Not your worst mistake
When the noise is finally through
Who are you?

Verse 2

I thought I was my failures
Then You called me by my name
I thought shame could be my address
But You never said the same
I thought I had to earn love
Prove that I deserved the room
Then You showed me grace was speaking
Before I had a thing to prove
So I laid down every label
That You never gave to me
And somewhere in surrender
I began to finally see

Chorus

Who are you when the lights go down?
Who are you when nobody's around?
When everything you built falls through
Do you know who God says is you?
Not what they called you
Not what you lost
Not your greatest win
Not your worst mistake
When the noise is finally through
Who are you?

Bridge — call & response

You say I'm chosen (Chosen)
You say I'm covered (Covered)
You say I'm called (Called)
I belong to You (His)
Before the applause (Chosen)
Before the mistakes (Covered)
Before I became (Called)
You already knew my name (His)

Breakdown

I am not what left me
I am not what broke
I am not the thing they said
When they didn't know
I am not my bank account
My status or my scars
I am who You say I am
And You know who You are

Final Chorus

Now I know when the lights go down
I know who I am when nobody's around
If everything I built falls through
I still know what You say is true
I am chosen
I am covered
I am called
I belong to You
I spent my life asking
Who I should become
Now I know whose I am
And I know who I am

Outro

Who are you?
Chosen.
Covered.
Called.
His.
